Sculpture Transformed: The Art of Marjorie Schick

Sculpture Transformed gathers 67 objects spanning 40 years of Schick’s experimentation with form, texture, and color. Her “body sculptures” are most famously seen in the form of large-scale head ornaments, massive ceremonial collars, cloaks, and back sculptures that seem to soar from the wearer. This hallmark exhibition highlights these acclaimed “body sculptures,” while taking the viewer on a voyage through a visual evolution of Schick’s style. In addition to sampling Schick’s wearable art constructions, this spectacular retrospective will include Schick’s renowned trompe l’oeil creations of everyday objects. These pieces vividly transform and interpret the mundane: a bracelet masquerades as a teapot, while a portion of a brick sidewalk becomes a cloak; a necklace entangles the wearer in glowing threads reminiscent of a dew-spangled spider web. Works in this second grouping will invite the visitor into an exceptional artistic sensibility that generates uniquely aesthetic connections from everyday experience.
