David Partridge was born in Akron, Ohio, in 1919 and died in Toronto, Ontario in 2006.  He became a naturalized Canadian in 1944, and was considered one of Canada’s leading artists.  He studied art at Hart House, University of Toronto, Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, the Art Students’ League in New York, the Slade School of Fine Art in London, and Atelier 17 in Paris.  His sculptural reliefs have been exhibited widely in the United States, Canada and England.  In addition, he received several large-scale public commissions.  Partridge’s abstract compositions, often set against a background of polished aluminum, feature shimmering waves of thousands of common nails.
