Stan Dann

Hand Tools, 1988
Mixed Media on Carved Wood, 69" x 47" x 6"

Stan Dann was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1931 and died in 2013.  Dann studied at the Faulkner Smith Academy of Fine Art, Vancouver, and received a B.A. from the Arts Center College, Los Angeles, in 1957.  Primarily working in California, he completed several public commissions in the United States, and his work is included in many corporate collections.  The artist created constructions composed of carved and painted wood elements in high relief juxtaposed against a flat background.  Dann combined geometric and organic shapes based on ordinary objects such as tools and appliances in his dynamic compositions, which are further energized by the expressionistic brushwork applied to the surfaces.
