Fritz Horstman: A Wayfaring Nature

Human society spends a lot of time and energy combating its natural origins. When an aspect of humanity bears too many markers of a natural process, we either privatize it or ritualize it. Over time, those aspects are elaborated upon in the form of clothes, ceremonies, architectural motifs, laws, and other modalities. Those privatized and ritualized aspects are the grounds for culture’s existence.
It is this membrane between nature and culture that the artist is interested in exploring. It is a virtually indefinable territory, because it permeates every corner of our lives. The modes of presenting Horstman's
findings are diverse, reflecting the ubiquity of the subject. The artist employs drawing, photography, installation, objects, sound, and video.
The photographs are hung as a frieze around the gallery depicting a natural pond as it transitions through the seasons. They are significantly placed in a position of cultural reverence and presented in a very linear and rational way. So is this nature or is it culture?
Horstman's work examines the underlying principals of how human culture is constructed and how it relates to the natural systems in place. He sees ecology as the system through which an organism
interacts with its environment. In that sense, this work is entirely ecological.
Horstman received his BFA from Kenyon College and his MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art. He has exhibited nationwide, as well as in Paris, France.

December Member's Show
Amy Boone- McCreesh

Amy's work is a tribute to craft and the long human tradition of making. She is interested in exploring the cultural lines between functional items and decoration while revisiting these themes in the context of contemporary art. Found objects, second-hand fabrics, celebratory ephemera, repetition and the amassing of materials and mark-making are her primary vehicles for expression. Referencing the visual vocabulary within her 3D works have acted as a way to inform and ground the abstract compositions of her 2D work. Amy's primary goal is to evoke imagery of rituals, tradition and ceremony while maintaining a contemporary aesthetic.
Amy Boone-McCreesh received her BFA from the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design in 2007 and her MFA in Painting from Towson University in 2010. She has had exhibitions across the Mid-Atlantic in Baltimore, Wilmington DE, Fairfax VA, Lancaster PA, and Brooklyn NY.
November Member's Show
Michelle Gomez and Jonathan Wille: The First Supper

A collaboration between Michelle Gomez and Jonathan Wille, The First Supper is both an installation and three performances that deals with cultural and identity issues by looking at the idea of a non-traditional family. During the performances, viewers witness the artists enacting dysfunction at a family dinner, exploring the notion of
roles and performance particular to each family member. The father figure, transformed into a character through generalized stereotypes acts as the main character of the narrative. As three hour performances, viewers are invited to come and go as they please, offering an alternative to a more common audience-performer dynamic. Like a theater set, between performances the vibrant and chaotic dining room installation echoes of the absence of the performers, emphasizing the physical presence of the viewer and their own performative roles as they enter the space.
Hillyer Art Space Photo Contest Winners
Through the month of October, Hillyer Art Space sponsored a photo contest to accompany Keith Lane's iPhone exhibit iwishyouwerehere. The contest was a fantastic success with over sixty submissions from artists around the nation and world. The winners were selected by the gallery staff for their interesting compositions, subject matter, and execution. Jennifer Markely's photo Ticket to Ride was taken at the 2011 Virginia State Fair with her iPhone 4 and was processed with the Instagram app. Morgan Marinoni's photo, Prete Operaio don Battista Mignani, was taken in 2009 in Azzone Italy and depicts a priest celebrating his first mass in Azzone, a small town of 437 residents.
Both works were on display in the gallery during the month of November and were available for purchase.
October Member's Show
Featuring: Seth Remsnyder & Everitt Clark

The October nin9 exhibition is a group show contrasting black and white images of member artist Everitt Clark with the intense colors of Seth Remsnyder’s works. Though dramatically different in media and subject matter each artist highlights the beauty of abstract form in both obvious and hidden ways.
September Members' Show

The September exhibition is a group show highlighting street-inspired urban themed art. The concept of the exhibition chronicles cultural associations made towards "streetlife" and the silent confidence or "attitude" conveyed within every piece. The contrasting playfulness of bright colors retains and portrays the facetiousness often prevalent in urbanity. Foremost, the pieces communicate and draw attention towards socially relevant themes.
September's Member Show features the work of:
GA Gardiner, Kate Boone, Quierra Wells, and Ruth Schilling Harwood.

April Member Show In Unison
April's exhibition showcased selected works from In Unison: 20 Washington, DC Artists. Sponsored by Millennium Arts SalonIn Unison represents a collaboration of 20 diverse Washington, DC artists in terms of ethnicity, gender, age, and artistic approaches.
These artists – painters, sculptors, digital media and installation artists, and a few printmakers – came together in the welcoming space of the print studios at George Mason University School of Art to each create 5 monoprints. And while they were exploring their artistic expression individually through the printing process, the environment provided opportunities for interaction among the artists and promoted a true sense of collaboration.
In the Washington, DC environment where art communities are still largely segregated, these artists crossed the line both literally and figuratively. The process by which these works were born reflects the unifying vision of the exhibition as a whole.
Twenty of the monoprints were initially selected for exhibition at the Kreeger Museum earlier this year. Now the Hillyer Art Space is pleased to show selected works of the 20 as In Unison enters the traveling exhibition phase of the project, which will be managed by International Arts & Artists.
This project is sponsored by Millennium Arts Salon, which has been serving the DC arts community for over 11 years. Millennium extends special thanks to George Mason University for use of its print studio.

Dispersed
by Craig Kraft, Lauren Kotkin, Ellen Weiss Exhibition Dates: Jan 7 through Jan 28, 2011
January's show featured the work of Craig Kraft, Lauren Kotkin, and Ellyn Weiss. Utilizing his “found” stream of consciousness sketches as inspiration, Kraft creates neon sculptures designed to remind his audience of the maze of thoughts and emotions that remain unnoticed and unappreciated in the human mind. Kotkin’s paper cut-out arrangements mime the patterns of Prague’s mosaic sidewalks, in the process exploring and reassembling her personal emotions, which she feels are analogues for broken, shifted, and reshaped mosaics. Weiss’ vision is to create art which bypasses the need for explanation and mediation and which speaks directly to the heart. The energy of her pieces bespeaks a furious creative process. Unifying the aesthetically dissimilar styles of these artists is an appreciation for the intensity and unpredictability of the human mind and for its rapidly shifting thoughts and emotions.
This show was curated by Barbara Liotta—a Hillyer Art Space Artists’ Advisory Committee Member and a sculptor living in Washington DC.
