Which Came First? Drawing Conclusions
by Kari Minnick
Exhibition Dates: November 2, 2007 – December 20, 2007
Which Came First? Drawing Conclusions, featured kilnformed glass by local artist Kari Minnick. Minnick's glass "collages" combine bold composition, sensitive drawings and fluid edges to create a body of work expressive in its content and form alike. Using flame-worked linear elements and images drawn directly into glass powders, Minnick creates signature pieces reminiscent of gestural drawings. Her use of still life elements in her work nod to traditional painting, while her layering of colors, images and hand cut glass break new artistic ground.

Hechinger Collection: Tools As Art
Exhibition Dates: September 17 - October 23, 2007
The collection inherited from Washington collector and hardware pioneer, John Hechinger, celebrates the ubiquity of tools in our lives with art that magically transforms utilitarian objects into fanciful works of beauty, surprise and wit. The unique collection of 20th century art represents the theme of tools and hardware while maintaining a paradox between the autonomous, mass-produced tool and a unique expression of an artist’s imagination. The exhibition featured some highlights of the exceptional collection.
Ice Stories: Digital Prints
by Lisa Sheirer
Exhibition Dates: September 7, 2007 - October 25, 2007
To create her Ice Stories, artist Lisa Sheirer takes photographs of natural landscapes through ice coated windows, then manipulates them to create abstracted compositions. Minimalist in shape, but complex in their detail, Sheirer sculpts the images digitally in order to accentuate the symmetry and repetition found in the pattern of the ice crystals. The Ice Stories radiate the natural color of the landscape and appear illuminated from within. No longer resembling a traditional landscape, Sheirer’s abstract forms instead exude the inner energy of the landscape.
Eve: A Series
by Mia Rollow
Exhibition Dates: August 3, 2007 - September 20, 2007
Eve: A Series by Mia Rollow featured the artist’s latest ventures in video and sound. Rollow’s large-scale video projections explored microscopic facets of natural phenomena, which transformed under her lens into ambiguous morphing landscapes. Sensually rich environments composed of movement, sound and light emerged onscreen and confounded the viewer with their mystery. Presenting poetic depictions of the epic within the infinitesimal, Rollow allowed viewers to access a realm of the unknown.
Monica Tinker: Out of b[Order]
Exhibition Dates: July 6, 2007 – August 30, 2007
Monica Tinker: Out of b[Order] was a site-specific installation that incorporated the use of natural and man-made materials to create a live studio where experimentation and play, rather than the results of those processes, took center stage. Out of b[Order] evolved organically over the course of two months, as Tinker returned to Hillyer Art Space on multiple ocassions to alter her work. Her adjustments reflected the challenge to find order among disparate fragments of experience while confronting the passage of time.

Selections from the Artery Collection
Exhibition Dates: April 13, 2007 – June 22, 2007
This exhibition is held in conjunction with the city-wide Colorfield Remix program led by the Kreeger Museum. The exhibition features four artists who originally showed works in the "Washington Color Painters" exhibition at the Washington Gallery of Modern Art in Washington, DC in 1965; these include Gene Davis, Howard Mehring, Thomas Downing, and Paul Reed. Added to the mix of first generation color field painters are Willem de Looper, Alma Thomas, and Anne Truitt. While each of these artists is not necessarily defined by their relationship to the Washington Color School, they are eternally linked in their emphasis on color and light. IA&A sincerely thanks the Artery Collection for loaning works to the exhibition.
Erin Cluley: Veiled
Exhibition Dates: March 2, 2007 – April 6, 2007
Veiled, an exhibition of paintings and mixed media works by Baltimore-based artist Erin Cluley, explores the nature of religion and its divergent symbols and rituals. Inspired by her up bringing in the Catholic Church, Cluley questions the religious values that shaped her existence, particularly the ritualistic practices of confession, penance, and the sacrament of the mass. A recent visit to the Alhambra, a group of palaces in southern Spain, informs Cluley’s use of tranquil ornamentation found in Moorish art. By utilizing light, shadow, and pattern metaphorically, she creates an atmospheric space for rigidity and expansiveness to coexist. Inanimate adornment placed against veils of iconic characters found in Catholic art results in a spiritually textured and experimental style.
