Marilyn: Celebrating an American Icon

Beginning a new world tour in honor of the 50th Anniversary of Marilyn Monroe's death in 2012, this exhibition is based on the hugely popular exhibition featuring 125 works including paintings, photographs and video of the legend herself.  Previous venues of the original Life as a Legend exhibition include: Boca Raton Museum of Art, Dayton Art Institute, Chicago Cultural Center, Glenbow Museum and the Andy Warhol Museum. While this exhibition has broken attendance records often up to 25% more, the selection of work by major artists makes it much more than a vibrantly illustrated celebrity biography but a celebration of the icon herself and how her image still electrifies the world, 50 years after her death.

Employing a dynamic range of artists and media, Marilyn: Celebrating an American Icon visually celebrates and explores both the celebrity of, and the woman behind, one of the world's most recognizable icons. This exhibition is intended not only for those who appreciate the arts and diversity in media and style, but also for the ultimate Marilyn fan.

Debuting at the National Film Museum in Sao Paolo, Brazil, in March 2012, Marilyn Monroe as an icon is seen through the art of Andy Warhol, Milton H. Greene, Antonio de Felipe, Cecil Beaton, Douglas Kirkland, Henri Cartier-Bresson and many more. More than 120 works by over 50 artists capture Marilyn's rise to stardom in styles ranging from fashion photography to Pop Art.

Marilyn: Celebrating an American Icon celebrates the many sides of this 1950s glamour goddess and immortal legend through shots of well-loved movie scenes and familiar publicity photos, biographical glimpses into Marilyn's private moments as well as more abstract interpretations of Marilyn. There will never be another Marilyn Monroe as shown by this all-star list of renowned and diverse artists paying tribute to America's favorite sex symbol.
