Leaded: The Materiality and Metamorphosis of Graphite

Summary | Specifications | Tour Schedule | Images | Installations | Press | Checklist (PDF)

Leaded features 44 artworks by 16 international contemporary artists who utilize the physical nature and characteristics of graphite and pencils as content in their two- and three-dimensional work. The art in Leaded, while employing a fundamental drawing media, stands outside of the generalized history of modern drawing. The role of mark-making is subsumed or completely absent from many of the pieces. Likewise, representation is a secondary motivation.

Leaded presents artwork grouped into three overlapping themes by these emerging and established artists: Graphite as Content, with works by Hsin-Hsi Chen, Christopher Cook, Meghan Gerety, Shimon Okshteyn, Gloria Ortiz-Hernández, Mark Sheinkman, and Molly Springfield; Graphite as Transformative Agent, with works by James Busby, Sara Lovitt, Stefana McClure, and Stephen Sollins; and Graphite as Sculpture, with works by Michael Joaquin Grey, The Art Guys, Marco Maggi and Creighton Michael.
