Ladder Piece

Gary Kuehn, Ladder Piece, 1986
steel and wood
70 x 40 x 14 in.

Gary Kuehn was born in Planfield, New Jersey, in 1939. He completed a B.A. in art history at Drew University, Madison, New Jersey, in 1962 and an M.F.A. at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey, in 1964. He has exhibited widely in the United States and Europe. Kuehn plays with basic definitions of primary forms and found objects, fusing them at the moment of transition. An interest in finding parallel psychic states complements this fascination with the phenomenology of materials. A sense of immediacy and of Duchampian irony mark his sculptures, which often point to a struggle or to sexual release.
